Post X-species mixing advice please!
I have a little Parrotlet, called Button-Blue. He is alone in his cage, the only small bird here who is alone :( I am, have been wondering whether to pop him into the large aviary with the tiels and little Percy, the lineolated parakeet. I have read that Parrotlets have a nasty bite despite their size, and may not always be friendly/accepting to other birds. Naturally, I do not want to put the tiels or Percy at any risk!!! However, Percy has blended in beautifully with the tiels.
Can anyone guide me? I hate seeing this sweet, timid little Parrotlet housed alone, month in, month out. he is too scared to be handled, so I cant give him hands on comfort and warmth.
Should I risk it? He looks so alone, and if he was in the aviary, he could also fly instead of flutter. There must be more to life than what he is currently getting, poor little chap :(

Parrotlets should be housed alone. Even if they have mates, for the most times they have to be in separate cages except for supervised playtime as they are EXTREMELY territorial and agressive. They are actually happier by themselves. As long as he has tons of toys, which is a MUST for parrotlets, he will will be just fine. I know you give tons of toys!

With time and patience and love which we all know you have in abundance, this little guy might be handable in time.

Hi, thanks for the replies :) It would seem that its very inadvisable to house a little Plet with my other birds, so, as you say Carol, I'll just keep working on him. He is at least in the bird room, so he does have them to twitter to! He came from a horrible home, along with 4 other tiels. To give you an idea of what they lived in, it took me two solid hours of scrubbing, wire-brushing, soaking in boiling water to get the cage parts something LIKE clean :( The only answer was to provide them all with nice new cages. He doesent scream round his cage in hysterics now when I stand and talk, but handling may be a forever no-no. God knows what he has witnessed and suffered. Main thing is, he is safe, warm, well fed and healthy now. I dunno, the more experience I get, the more I realise how very little I know!

Anne, you are prompted to learn by your love and concern for the best care for your birds. I wish more people were like you. I have read your replies to people in the cockatiel forum at MyToos and you always give really really good answers and supportive advice.

Bravo to you.

Anne,
I would think from Button-Blue's view of life - He figures he's either dreaming a wonderful dream or has finally found a home where he is loved just as he is.

You're doing better than fine :-) and he does have company to chatter with.
